Kralendijk – Bonaire is rijk aan sinkholes en grotten, waarvan velen nog steeds onontgonnen zijn. Deze natuurlijke schoonheden zijn enerzijds onschatbare reservoirs van natuurlijke hulpbronnen, ecologische interacties en ecosysteemdiensten; en aan de andere kant, een schat aan lokale tradities en culturele waarden.

In contrast met deze bevoorrechte toestand, worden grotten en karst op het eiland constant bedreigd door antropogene effecten (zoals onder andere vervuiling, structurele schade, steenwinning, vandalisme en verstoring van vleermuizenkolonies) en gebrek aan beschermende wetgeving. Ze vertegenwoordigen een natuurlijke en culturele hulpbron die bescherming behoeft en een beheersplan voor duurzaam gebruik.

Het doel van deze cursus is om een uitgebreide training te bieden aan bedrijven of personen die tours aanbieden met een licentie. Onderwerpen zijn het grotten- en karstsysteem van Bonaire, basisbegrippen over hun bijbehorende flora, fauna en ecologie, grotten en sinkholes in de Boneriaanse cultuur, grotbegeleiding, grotveiligheid, eerste hulp en een sluitingsforum, waarin de meest relevante onderwerpen met betrekking tot het management van de nieuwe Bonaire Caves en Karst Park aan bod komen.

Aan het einde van de cursus zijn de studenten voorbereid om de grot tour onder veilige omstandigheden aan te bieden, het gebruik van grotten als een recreatieve bron te optimaliseren en bij te dragen aan het behoud van hun integriteit en biodiversiteit.

De Caribbean Speleological Society (CARIBSS) verleent certificering als grotten en karst-gids na voltooiing van de cursus. Een belangrijk resultaat van deze training en het forum zal de oprichting zijn van het “Bonaire Cave Tour Guides Network”, dat in samenwerking met het Openbaar Lichaam Bonaire (OLB) zal werken om het beheer van grotten als recreatieve locaties op het eiland te organiseren en te coördineren en om het wettelijk kader voor duurzaam gebruik en bescherming.

Certification

CARIBSS certification as Caves & Karst Tour Guide will be granted to participants upon completion of the course (100% attendance), approval of the First Aid module and signed commitment to create the Bonaire Cave Tour Guides Network.

Important notice: This certification is not linked to the current legislation of the Island Territory of Bonaire.

Application and course fee

Interested parties need to complete the application form provided and submit it by email to jafet.nassar@gmail.com before May 15^th, 2019. Fully completed applications received will go through a selection process. Selected applicants will be informed to proceed with full payment of the registration fee. Proof of payment must be received before May 31^st, 2019. The cost of the course is US$ 325.00. Course fee includes one personal 2019 CARIBSS membership. A 100.00 US$ discount will be applied to the registration fee with proof of valid First Aid certification (submitted as an attachment together with the application).
