In the 17th century, slaves came to the island to work in the salt pans. In their spare time, they placed the local instrument known as the barí….it expressed frustration, anger, and joy. After the slaves were given their freedom, playing on the barí become a reasured tradition. In the month of December, our ancestors gathered at the Piedra Pretu on Bonaire’s windward shore to play the barí.
This coming Saturday, 30th November, the next edition of the cultural event, Nos Zjilea, will be held at the Mangazina di Rei Cultural Park. This month’s theme is Pone Barí Ronka, which can be translated into “the celebration of the tradition of the local instrument Bari.” The main objective of this edition is to stimulate appreciation for our cultural heritage of music.
Mr. Papito “Felix” Thomas, as a representative of SKAL, the governmental Department of Culture, will announce “the celebration of the tradition of the local instrument Bari.” Subsequently, the youngsters from the music group, Ayo Mundu, and the dance group, Zoya Ku Nos, who have been taught by Mr. Gonsalvo “Kòrá” Goeloe, Mr. Wesley “Wèwè” Sint Jago, and Mrs. Jumira Goeloe will open the Pone Bari Ronka celebration with a presentation that they have prepared exclusively for this occasion.
Today, one does not often hear of how the instrument barí is made. Mr. Marlon Rombley will give a demonstration on how to make a barí in the traditional way. During the period of the barí, one can listen to different songs, all with underlying meanings that rhyme like poetry. Mr. Wesley “Wewe” Sint Jago will explain a series of underlying meanings for these songs. In addition, there will also be a special presentation by our elderly from the Cocaroi residence. Don’t miss the opportunity to listen to the poetry entitled “Kantami na Barí” by Mrs. Fransisca “Chika” Balentin. Come and listen to the poetry of Mrs. Alfoncina “Elsa” Janga, entitled “Dede pa ki mi tin bo.”
As always you can enjoy the folkloric dancing of Donny & Monique Winklaar and everyone is always welcome to participate. All this in a cozy atmosphere with a live performance by the local band Grupo Tutti Frutti.
At Nos Zjilea also there will be various market stalls with local, fresh products, arts and crafts, and local dishes. The kitchen opens at 10 a.m
